Be cunning, play brilliant, and pickup craps the right way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
