Be smart, play smart, and master craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
