Be brilliant, play brilliant, and pickup craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
