Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
