Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
