Be clever, play smart, and become versed in craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
