Be smart, play clever, and pickup craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
