Be cunning, play smart, and learn how to play craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
