Be cunning, play clever, and become versed in craps the right way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
