Be clever, play cunning, and master craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
