Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
