Be cunning, play brilliant, and pickup craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
