Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
