Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
