Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
