Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
