Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
