Be smart, play clever, and learn how to play craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
