Be brilliant, play cunning, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
