Be clever, play clever, and pickup craps the right way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
