Be cunning, play cunning, and learn how to play craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
