Be smart, play cunning, and learn how to play craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
