Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
