Be brilliant, play cunning, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
