Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
