Be clever, play smart, and master craps the right way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
