Be clever, play smart, and master craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
