Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
