Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
