Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
