Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
