Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
