Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
