Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
