Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
