Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
