Be cunning, play smart, and pickup craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
