Be cunning, play clever, and pickup craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
