Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
