Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
