Be clever, play cunning, and learn how to play craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
