Be cunning, play cunning, and pickup craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
