Be brilliant, play smart, and learn how to play craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
