Be cunning, play brilliant, and master craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
