Be cunning, play clever, and master craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
