Be cunning, play brilliant, and learn how to play craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
