Be brilliant, play cunning, and master craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
