Be brilliant, play cunning, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
