Be cunning, play brilliant, and master craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
