Be cunning, play brilliant, and pickup craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
